Winemaking runs through the family blood. The Boucher family winemakers trace back to John’s Great Grandfather who established a 50 acre winery in Indigo valley in north east Victoria. This was then run by his Grandfather and his Uncle, making John the fourth generation winemaker.
John has completed over fifteen vintages on our estate. In recent years we have added John Lindell to the team as assistant winemaker. The winemaking is hands on with small batches and each batch has been given all the love and attention to produce the very best wine. This includes open fermenters, hand plunging the red wines and barrel fermenting the chardonnay. Sparkling is made in the Traditional style and bottle aged before release.
Pauline has close ties to the Kyneton district on her father’s side. Her great, great grandparents were colonists from 1858 and ran the ‘Bunch of Carrots’ hotel in Pipers Creek Road Kyneton. Her great grandparents were married in Kyneton in 1864 and her grandparents were both born in Kyneton.
The above history was an important part of forming the choice of site and the decision to re-establish the family in the district and establish a winery.
The vineyard was established in 1997 on an idyllic north slope with granitic soil over clay base. It is ideally planted with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The viticultural management is hands on. We believe quality of our wine starts in the vineyard.
The Pinot Noir vineyard is planted with MV6 clone in a 1980 style with 1000 vines to the acre and narrow rows. The vines have two arms which are cane pruned for quality and shoot thinned late spring. The chardonnay is very close planted with the Bernard clones. These vines have a single arm and are also cane pruned for quality.
The estate grown fruit is supplemented by carefully selected parcels of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes obtained from the established vineyards in the Macedon Ranges and Heathcote.
“If you are looking for John and Pauline, they will be surely in the vineyard or behind barrels in their winery! Started from nothing, they work tirelessly to produce refined and quality wines. In Kyneton Ridge Estate, wines are beautiful, interesting and offer a great value. We are fan of the beautiful balance of the chardonnay, the elegance of their Pinot Noir and the fineness of the sparkling Pinot noir Chardonnay, with the tiny bubbles reminding us of French Champagne.
For us, they exploit with passion their vineyard, select the most beautiful grapes and maintain the traditional hand making processes. However the most precious secret of this winery; it is the happiness of Pauline and John!”
